...rainy afternoon...

Its raining a lot!! So i have decided that rather than going and siting at Starbucks I would come to a place called the library where there is FREE internet!! Yes, you get to use the internet for FREE during 2 hours! How cool is that?? Im becoming so dutch. Tonight i also signed up for a FREE dinner and this morning I went on a FREE walking tour! Maybe too dutch?? I woke up and finally was able to borrow an adaptor from somebody.. haha im doing a lot of adaptor borrowing.. Mine doesnt work and so far I havent had the need to buy one (yeah im too dutch, borrowing and not spending money. I can also say im too Jennyl84 whaha!). So there was FREE breakfast in the hostel, which was very lekker. I met a girl from south korea who is also traveling on her own and it turned out she had also signed up for this free tour..So we headed with 10 more people to the tour. IT was meant to be 2 hours, but it took 3 hours. It was really nice. It turns out in Chicago you must have a green space, park at lesast 6 blocks away from your house. If you dont, then you can complain to the mayor! So cool! :) They got a lot of parcs, the millenium parc is really nice, it has a very big fountain and a lot of curious, intresting sculptures. After the walk I did some more recharging and grandma calls... you got to keep in touch every now and then, or they think the new contient has eaten you up!
Later on, I headed to this cheap mexican restaurant which was really LEKKER and went up to the Sears tower. I had to go up because i have seen it in so many MegaStructure shows, that it had to be seen. Next place to go up is the taipei101 builduing and the one in malaysia (forget the name...). The view wasnt that nice. I wanted to see lake Michigan, but since it was cloudy I couldnt see THAT much. Then it suddenly started to rain! Luckily i had taken the pictures already! :)As i headed down it was raining harder and harder. I decided not to go to Starbucks (so expensive!). There is a starbucks in EVERY SINGLE corner of this city! Its crazy! So i headed to McDonalds because they also had ice coffee. If you havent figured it out yet, im in love with ice coffe. But that mcdonals one wasnt that great (suprise..!). First I orderd medium and they gave me something that looked like XL for european standards. I told them I wanted medium and they said that what i had in my hands was already medium...!!! The taste was okay but so watery, and big that by the time i got to the library the cup was still half full...the cup traveled to the trash can. I wish the cup a lot of luck to its future travels in the recycling process...

..very pissed off!

Gisela wants to mention that she is EXTREMLY PISSED OF and people spening too much electricity and the ENECO bill ruining her evening!!!!!!!!!!

From now on im taking peoples bank account, passport numbers and all info when they move into my flats! FOR GOD SAKES!

....from Chicago....

I now am in Chicago and my main question is:HOW and When did i get here?? dont worry, im NOT on drugs. I went to bed at 12 pm in Toronto and i woke about 4 times in the middle of the night since i was afraid id miss the airport bus.Of course I woke up right on time and made it to the 4.20 bus. Then arrived in the airport super early. Check in took a while. It was strange because you would get your ticket but you would only deliver your luggage after passing the american police. My mistake number one was that I had to fill out an emmigration form since I wasnt canadian or american and the policeman said if i wanted it in english or spanish. Say english created an entire fuzz on why I hold a spanish passport and want a form in english. to maek a long story short I was so sleepy I filled the form wrong twice. I thought they would not alloww me to pass for being mentally pathetic. But at the end I made it through of course after 1,000 questions. I headed to the business lounge for some relaxing time, but there was bearly any free food and no free internet! grr! The worst is that i was almost falling asleep. Well, i made it to the plane and i bearly remember leaving the runway and then i saw we were landing in Chicago. I made sure I got off and not fell asleep as the flight was continuing to Texas. L O L.. I tried to check in the hostel but it was to early so i went on an architectural boat trip of the city around the river ..beautiful! Then I went on a city walk and had some lunch at this famous pizzeria. I was about to order this filled pizza, suposately very famous. However, I saw the sizes of the pizza and decided against it...Then i kept walking and finally did the check in and went directly to bed. What was suposed to be a power nap turned into 3 hours of sleeping. I later took the train. Its really cool because the train does a loop in the center of the city and then goes to the outskirts. So if you sit in a train it will take you all around, and will do a loop in the center. Its like a subway but its elevated so you get great views!! Chicago is really nice. I wasnt expecting it to be like this, but its got a bunch of really cool skyscrappers!! Chicago is on the coast of the lake michigan and it has a great walk by the water. Its a pitty i wount have enough time to explore the neighbourhoods. If any of you wants to rent an appartment in CHicago in the future let me know, maybe we can share it? I dont share with people who use too much electricity (no comment about that..).

Found very funny that as i walked through the airport there was an announcement that said "ladies and gentelman, homeland security has raised the security level to orange, so please keep all luggage attended and look out for luggae left unattended". All in this super serioius voice, as if we were in war zone. I just found it hilarious..

Too much blogging for the day! :) Finally a computer that goes fast! Leave some messages so that I know you are alive!

Missing a bus is great! :) Not!

i am moving to the technique of writing in my notebook and then tranfering it to the blogger. Yes,this technique suxs because its physically painful *its been a while since I write) And also, its painfully slow!! I thougth I was in love with my sunglasses(which i had bought in queensday after years of not having any(. But shit happensa nd they borke. I never liked sun glasses and now that its hot and very warm i really need them and they break. grrr!!!! That aint helpfull. What broke was the samll screw that holds the glass to the frame, but i am still weaering them since I am sitting down. I headed to the water front and everhithing here in great. Not many people (suprisingly!!), sun shining and no wind :) I decided not to go up on th CN tower because im a bit "fed up" of tower city views. I have seen Tornonto quite qell from the plane and that was enough.

I really like the traffic lights, they tell you exactly how many seconds you have left to cross. Its just funny:)Once I am in sydney I will upload as many pics as possible in the blog. The trams in tornonto are also very cute, they are old and RED looking. In the morning I did the north west loop turistic bus and after a while in the frontside I decided to catch a bus that does the east west look. But this only goes 4 times a day. I had to go to 200Ft.Street and they also have a stop at 123 ft street. So, I walked qauickly to the stop. I had the feeling I was in the wrong stop so I walk further down. Then asked someone if i was in the right place, i was todl by other tour guides that iw as at the right stop. However the bus never showed up. I was at the wrong place. Frustrated i headed to the souvenier shop with a sign "cheapest prices in toronto" and bought a 5 dollar t shirt..lets wsee how long it lasts. I sat at the coffe place and had a cafiato. Then i headed for a walking tour of the city for 1 hour and then met with my australian friend to go see the brewery. We had dinner at kensington market and ate some giant chilean empanadas, super lekker!! Im very frustrated about the fact that prices dont include taxes!! You think something is 4.99 but when you head to the cashier its 5.16!!! i am really looking forwards to my arrival in Texas. I havent seen Elaina since 1999 and spending some time at her place will be nice. Feraky though, her siblings will be so old, and no longer 4 year old kids!

There is a lot of ethnicity in Tornonto, peopole are from all over. Infact I saw a sign which said that a bus stop had been canceled and the sign was translated into 10 different languages. I dont think I want to live in this cioty its a bit too calm and quiet. For instance bus to airport comes every 20 mintues, in barcelona its every 6 minutes!!I can also imagine it must be freezing in the winter!! id like to do a trip across canada in the future. By car would be great, get of the beaten track and go see bears (haha. So drivers, are you gona join me?

Im also thinking about bkiking/camping tour of Ireland. So if anybody wants to join *this is speically directed to my biking partner). Talking about bikes, there are quite a few bikes in the city but they are ALL mountain bikes. Excpte i saw one that was RED dutch bike. It had no brakes and a whlee lock and a DUTCH FLAG!! hahaha also must note that its hard to believe there are 13 hour differnce with my parents!!So when i wake up they are about to go to bed..just crazy!

-------- Ready for departure from Toronto....

Girl on a mission. . .

Was not planing to do an entry but I got on internet to do some internet banking and now i got 15 min left of credit, so lets see how much I can type. First of all, the :S in my previous blog entry where copied from misses Jingaling...so its all her fault. I have to say that I am quite tiered for the past two days i have been waking up at 7:30 in the morning to do things.. But I have basically done nothing on my own, I have met a girl from Australia in the hostel and we took a ferry yesturday to cross to an island and see the skyland on Toronto. Then it turned out we were both booked for the same tour to NIagra falls,so we went there together as well. And we joined a guy from london and a girl from hongkong and visited niagra the four of us (we were in a tour, but we had 4 free hours in the falls). The falls were very nice, they were EXTREMLY touristy and hotels and builduings were right by the water. However we took a boat that took us literaly to the bottom of the falls and that was amazing, i took too many pictures, and luckily my camera is still working even though it got a bit wet. Later on we took a tunnel that went "under"the water and i got freaking soaked in water, but that was very entretaining. It turns out that in 1960 a 7 yearf old boy fell of the falls and he survived...wow!! There was also a tower you could climb and see the view from the top but i was so tiered that i passed on that one, i had seen too much wateralready. At night they did a light show and they lighted the waterfalls, really neat. That was the moment when my battery in my camera decided to die, however i still managed to take a few pictures. Later we headed back to toronto. This morning me the australian girl and another guy we went to kensington market, it was mostly closed cuz it was only 8am but we went to this delicious bakery and got some very lekker cookies :)I then headed on my own on a bus tour of tornonto that was included in the price of the hostel. It was a nice tour, 2 horus long. I might take the second route of the tour later on. However, its a hop on hop off bus but if you hop off the next bus takes at least 1 hour to come, so i found that bullshit. I dont have much time so i stayed in the trolley/bus for the journey. The sun has been shining these past days so it has been very nice, its quite hot. However, if you go to the shadow it gets chilly and then i need my Erasmus Sweater!! Buah i have an early wake up tommorrow 3.30am to catch a plane...exciting! As far as food goes, i havent been eating that much and ive been walking a lot, and yet i think im 20kilos heavier than when I left NL :( Later on I will head to a brewery with the australian girl and see the brewery and get some beer. I saw that a girl that left my room today left us 4 beers and a note saying..FREE BEER, ENJOY...woho! And its corona..even better! So for now that is all folks... hoping the rest of the trip goes as good as it has gone so far.

A few lines from Toronto

They do say the world is small...but I was not expecting to see somebody from block 1 SCM walking out of the hostel as I walked in. Unfortunately he was leaving to montreal (i believe) and I was entering but that was just suprising. We stared at each other and asked "what ARE YOU doing here"..what a coincidence. Im finally in Toronto and today met up with my friend from highschool..walked aroudn the city and did some shoping that she had to do since she lives in the middle of nowhere 2 hours away from Toronto. Unfortunately exams always come so she couldnt come for longer than a day since she had a finance exam tommorrow (yuck!)..as she left I decided id go take a walk around the city and then it started raining mad, which meant no walk. By the time i got to the hostel i was soked in water as if I had jumped into lake Ontario...So far so good, the hostel is really nice. I think that together with circus hostel in Berlin this is one of the best I have been so far. I had to que a lot to get into the country, police checks...and go quite a few questionairs. They let everybody pass but they stoped me "who bought your ticket" "where does your father live" "what does he do" "do you know people in canada" " what are their names" "how long will you stay" " where was the ticket bought" blah blah blah "when was the ticket bought"blah blah blah.. but eventually they let me go :) I had a crazy dude siting by me in the plane. He was sitting next to me and litteraly dancing to the music on his mp3..yuck :S And he was OLD..but i felt asleep and when i woke up he was gone! I went through a search to make sure they hadnt made him jump off the plane for being crazy and found he was siting 3 rows infront of me. Andyeah..he was still dancing to his music...crazy wako. This computer is being very slow..the people in this hostel are very nice, i met a bunch of people last nite and there is a bunch of people who study english in Tornonto and they litteraly live in the hostel for like 6 months..cool huh? I find so funny that every biker in the city wears a helmet, hahahaha..The city is pretty nice so far, in the center there are the skyscrapers, not too many and then the city goes outward with a bunch of little houses. . . Its pretty neat to meet all this travelers in the hostel, i think it should be nice to come to Canada in the future and take a trip around the country and the natural parcs. There are quite a few nice ways to visit this place and the cities seem just the starting point.. tommorrow ill head to Niagra Falls. I have heard that it aint that great, so im a bit afraid. I have been told that it is EXTREMLY turistic and that there is the city all around it. After the Iguazu falls I have very high expectations but we will see how these are. Well, for now this is all folks :)
Ira and i met in Toronto for 1 day! Awesome!

Believe it or not but I am already updating my blog! Some of you should be happy that im doing so :) Im sitting in the business lounge in London and they got free internet, unlike the one in Schipol (really shitty one they got there). The point is that i have the silver card for BA so i get to come to the lounge hhahahah. Well since i did the big mistake of not writing anything when i was in india i think thi is a good way of keeping in track of what i do and where i am.I still dont know how i manage to wake up this morning since i was up with dina and irum until too late last night and only managed to sleep two hours. I got a few wake up calls today.

1st wake up call Irias sms wake up service
2nd wake up call alarm clock
3rd wake up call my phone alarm
4th wake up call irums phone alarm.

I stil manage to do everything i had to do which wasnt much, specially taking into account that i was sleeping in the couch (btw maria, i agree that couch is great!!) I rushed to CS with my luggage to cahtch my train which i made it to. Met my first canadian friends in the train hahaha socialised a bit, woke up a bit more and did the check in. I dont get why the develop baggage drop areas if it takes as long as normal checking in does. Pff... they should rethink about that system. So i was quite happy i made it to my train. I did pretty good but smth was wsrong with my luggage cuz the wheel kept making a horrible noise. TSK!!!! Well i cant wait to get to Sydney and grab my backpack that is just so much more confortable. My luggage is quite small, taking into account that i will go through summer plus winter and i am taking the same kilos i take when i go to BCN for 4 days, except now its 3 months... Hmmm I think i finally learned to pack extremly efficeinty. And another very intresting fact, is that i have moved back to my tradition of having a watch. im afraid my battery might die at any point so i am now with two watches (my phone and my own). I really just want to arrive at tornonto. I didnt even see how we left schipol i just felt a sleep right when i sat down and then i heard "10 minutes to landing"... grr im at terminal 4 heathrow. SO freaking old, i never liked this terminal. But BA is soon moving to Terminal 5 so that is good! If you dont mind im gona go and get the free food there is in the lounge before i go grab my plane! yuhooo im going to Canada :):):):):)

Well well believe it or not, miss holland... i not only have no one to talk to but also no fridges or my pal toshiba to bitch at! :S

Summer 2006, Varanasi, India

Who are we? We carry backpacks and we travel around the world. That simple? Well..yes and no! We are backpackers, backpacking the world. We do travel around the world - we wish we could travel a lot more. However, some of us are fortunate to be on round the world trips lasting many months or even years visiting many countries or maybe bumming around a few countries. Some of us travel for merely weeks at a time needing to return to full time jobs. Many of us are in our late teens, twenties & thirties. Some of us are still backpacking the world and ho, we are older than 40!

Oh I am so frustrated now. I had written a huge entry when my computer crashed and it got deleted!!! So I will try to rewrite it with all my frustration! I am frustrated as I found some super cool, cheap, for independent travelers tours around california. But it turns out that they all start two days before I arrive in California! Grr! I was intending on traveling on my own. But, I have also thought that finding a cheap and intresting tour around some part in california would definately be intresting. I am not intending to go in a bus with 50 retiered people. I have about 7 nights so im trying to figure out where to go and what to do. I wanted to go to LA (mainly for the hollywood stuff) and also Las Vegas. But i dont want to spend too much time traveling around and not seeing things, so I might just stay in one place. I do land in San Fransicso and that is definatively a M U S T. Well who cares, ill let my frustration run away and find something when I arrive at my tortoise hostel :)
I do have to say that part of my routine is to check the sites of vueling, easyjet, ryanair, transavia, smart wings etc. Part of the time is also spend checking the thorntree of lonely planet, and people´s blog of their RTW ticket. Which tends to make me wonder what life would be if i could take 1 year to go and travel around the world with unlimited funds to not have to worry about anything. Would I really like it, or would I be fed up after 2 months? Well, its stupid to be wondering such questions taken into account that this trip is not anywhere near happening.
Well, so due to my day frustrations with my best pal Toshiba I will leave you all till the next entry :)
D O E I !¡!¡!

Environment: ....us and the future...

Foto of me 8 years ago at Perito Moreno,Argentina... (I wonder how the glaciar looks now)

Robert Swan caught my attention when he came to deliver a speach on Identity at the Business Week 2007 at Erasmus University. It was his amazing communicating skills plus his amazing carrer that left me perplexed.

Belive it or not by the age of 33 he had walked to the north and south poles. Its astonishing how determined and focus some individuals can be about their goals. And you would wonder why the hell Id care about someone who has walked the poles. To begin with he did the walk all on his own. These walks were only the beggining of his carrer. They inspired him to strive for his goal " to work for the preservation of the Antarctic as the last great wilderness on earth". He then became the UN Goodwill Ambassador and had to deliver a speach about conservation of the enviorment. Shocking to me was the images he showed us of a before and after place in the Antartica from where he removed 1,000 tons of garbage. All this removal was done by hand, and they could only work in the terrain 3 months every year. In his fight towards sustainability and preservation for the enviorment he also bought a Yacht, named 2041 by which he went around Africa informing about AIDS and enviormental problems. He now leads expeditions to antartica and has opened an education station in Antartica.
Robert Swan, has left his life behind and has no money nor pension funds waiting for him. He is working on what he believes neeeds to be done to save our enviorment now and for the future. Its admirable how dedicated he is, and how determined he is to transmit his believes to others.
I think lately we have all heard a lot of enviormental talk, but sometimes it takes good speaker to inspire us to do a large change. Just think about the next two things:

  • 10 of the past 15 years were the hottest on record
  • Antarctica's ice sheet holds 70% of the world's fresh water supply. If it were to melt, the world's oceans would rise approximately 70 meters or 230 feet

And do note that in 2041 it will not only be the 40th anniversary of september 11 attacks, the 100 th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour and the 50th anniversary of the dissolution of the Soviet Union. But most importantly, it will be the year that the Environmental Protocol of the Antarctic Treaty comes up for review. This treaty has set the antartica as a scientific preserve and military activity in the continent is banned. Lets keep it this way and work together to preserve the enviorment and our future lives.

...Summer...

So the summer itinerary is complete!!! Im really excited as the journey approches, except for the fact that I will be traveling alone. You can have a look at My more exact itinerary, but in the bottom i attach an overall picture, created by MyMaps of Google :) In total it will be 4 days in Toronto and almost 3 weeks in the states, mainly jumping around cities for very short times. Chicago,Washington,Dallas (not intending to meet with Bush, but might arrange a meeting with him..) San Franscico (and hoping around California) and Hawaii. Then towards Sydney (where I will be working) to spend some time with my parents, a visit to friends in Melbourne and a visit to Auckland and northern Australia. Then arrival in Bangkok to spend one month backpacking in Laos&Cambodia, and before spending 1 week with my parents at my old home Tokyo (super freaking excited about that!!!) ill spend 3 days in Singapore.
Then, back via London to Amsterdam and take all my things and go to Paris to start a new life and hmm try and get some rest :)

Well, I will be meeting a few of you in most of the locations. If by any chance you are traveling as well, do let me know, meeting up is always good. Im gona see a bunch of you this summer, which is very exciting :D But suprises are always welcomed! Im leaving the transiberia train for next year :) but yeah, its still in my list :)

For now, thats all folks!

Almost a week since arrival from Italy

Vezza D Oglio + Bailey´s ---- "Back into the past"
It is scary how quickly time is flying bye. One weekend ago we were in Italy, and now here we are finalizing our courses and I am geting ready for my summer departure. It just feels that things are going a bit too quickly. But I cant stop time!!! As I get all the preparations done for moving away and for my summer trip (by the way itineary is definative and hostels have been booked!). I got about 5 shifts to go in my job, and then its over....woho, just sounds surreal.
In the meanwhile i have spend a few hours today attempting to create my own website which hasnt been very successful with the free webhosters, so maybe we will leave that for another day :D Better to keep you all updated through my blog.

Since I didnt upload any pictures from the past weekend I have decided it might be a good idea to do so. So here we go. . . (unfortunately its just taking too long to upload the pictures, so I leave these 3 images as the summary of my past weekend in Italy)

The little kiten, so cute :)

Lovely Venice

Walk the World : World Hunger

Today we walked the world.

Walking the World is an event to raise awarness of hunger in the world. It takes place every year and people walk in each time zone of the world.Starting at 13.00 by the Erasmus bridge in Rotterdam, we walked 5 kilometers. The 5 kilometers were representative of the fact that every 5 seconds a child dies of hunger. In total 18,000 children die every day. So to raise some awarness, we joined the event organized by the World Food Program, and supported by TNT and Unilever, and walked together with 2498 other people the 5 kilometers. True, it was cloudy, but what can you expect from the Netherlands. . .

If you didnt walk this year dont forget to:

Walk the World in 2008
(you can walk a walk or organize your own)

and

Donate some money to the World Food Program

Wine

Its shamefull, embarrasing and pathetic.

As a country tries to go forward to reduce the number of deaths in the road, to try and implement a new driving license by "points", to try to rais conciousness of the importance of not mixing driving and drinking there is still one person who comes up with criticism ....very UNconstructive criticism.

Let me introduce you to mr.X who on may 4th was awarded the honorific medal from the Wine Academy in Castella y Leon (Spain). As he recieved his price he decided to make some remarks about how wine and driving are related.

His speach included the following statements:

After seeing the new advertisments which note that one should not drink and drive he states " Let me drink!" and ironically he joked about the new ads.

He also comments "I dont like to be told that I can not go at a higher velocity than that stated in the rules, that you can not eat hamburgers, you must prevent this and that and in addition I forbid you to drink wine"

" The number of wine glasses that I must or must not drink, let me drink them on my own and with peace. I am not puting anybodys life in stake, im not hurting anybody".

He has decided to name the traffic regulations agains drinking and driving as the "law agaist the wine" (Note:In Spain, it is still allowed to drink a cup of wine or a beer if you want to drive).

"Wine is a drink that all spaniards should be proud of"

Let me introduce you to the great man who made all these comments. His name is Jose Maria Aznar, and yes, he WAS the Spanish President (1996-2004). Simply unbelivable. Criticizing the opposition is okay. However, making such pathetic statements on the hard work of some that try and improve a system to make the roads saver for all of us is simply Disrespectfull, Pathetic, and Embarassing... And worse, to think that he was representing us for 8 years is outraging.

In case you havent met him yet: Here is his profile picture. P.S. His wife name is Ana Botella, let me translate (Ana Bottle), Dont forget to check out his little moustache, isnt he..... (you fill in the blank).

How ya all doing?

.... A nice weekend in italy, the gala party, the conference, a girls night out (well..), packing,planning,booking,working...and I feel T I E R D. Prospect for teh weekend. WORK, WALK and Rain. In other words WWR.. or world war rain, it doesnt seem to good..

And maybe this weekend, get into and actually finalize my university assignments, that would be a nice goal :)

If i would have some nice pictures I would upload them, but I am at uni and I am 30 minutes early so no pictures. Day in Venice was beautiful, with sun shining and extreme heat. Not to mention taht due to the fact that the previous day in the Alps had been cold we were walking around Venice with our winter coats in our hand while everybody else had a t/shirt on. All I can say is I feel sorry for somebody who wanted to buy some 250 euro channel glasses and ended up having to buy a fake gucci bag from the street :P We also ended up in a very high quality high end restaurant (yeah right...) and of course we also rode the 80 euro or 100 euro (i forget..) gondola... NOT!

Whenever i am inspired to write something that at least makes some sense i dont have the keyboard infront of me. And now that i have free time all I can do is write some bullshit. I suggest you go and check http://shuggams.blogspot.com/ for some more info on konneginedag and on our 4 day trip to Italy. By the way, I was NOT scared of the kitten, except for uhm one night :)

Currently:
Cant Wait for --> the RWT TRIP! Starting may 26th!!!!
Dont really care about --> about my bday coming on may 26th!!!
Would like to have a chat with --> Ballon woman
Cant believe --> There are only about 5 more days of work to go...
Happy about --> House Prices in Spain going down :) (although obviously not accepted by the minister in Spain) Maybe i can actually buy a house there now (i mean in 20 years)
Things to do in the next 2 weeks --> 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,002,341,342,1456

-----Any topic you would like me to talk about next time? :P

Time to go to class.

Not only do i agree that there might be a correlation between length of entry and boredom as stated by shuggams, but also between hours of sleep and topic of entry. As a proof, i have had 3 hours of sleep tonight :)

If any body wants to join on sunday we are walking the world!
